Brie Larson Reflects On ‘Life-Changing’ Experience Of Playing Captain Marvel In The MCU

Does the importance of Captain Marvel extend beyond the MCU? Brie Larson reflects on how she’s changed since taking on the role of Carol Danvers.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Captain Marvel was one of the most impactful films ever released in the MCU. Even though it was far from the first female-led superhero flick to hit the silver screen, it could be argued to have had the greatest impact. Her first film alone hit a billion dollars at the box office, with Brie Larson’s performance as the lesser-known heroine managing to out gross Wonder Woman by the end of its run. Since then, Carol Danvers has become a household icon for girls all across the globe.

Of course, impact isn’t just measured in positivity. Captain Marvel was a controversial film, both quality and subject-wise. And similar to how the negative impact of Star Wars: The Last Jedi led to Kelly Marie Tran being ran off social media, Brie Larson has been attacked all across the internet following her taking up the mantle of Carol Danvers in the MCU. Due to her high-profile nature, Larson essentially become the poster child for hate in the new era of the franchise.

Brie Larson Speaks On The Impact Of Captain Marvel

Just over a year out from her last appearance as Carol Danvers in the MCU, Brie Larson looks back on how her iconic role as catapulted her in the public eye, for better or for worse. She reveals that she always knew Captain Marvel would make her life much more visible than it was before. However, she felt the fear of taking on such a role wasn’t nearly as important as the impact it could have on people watching it.

“I was aware that taking Carol would make me more of a public person than I was before,” Larson explained to The Telegraph. “But I thought that what the film was saying was more important than my fear, and I also thought I trusted myself to know how to manage my life.”

“It was a life-changing experience. A lot of the characters I play, I’m like ‘thank you, goodbye’ once it’s done. I don’t feel the need to bring them home. With Captain Marvel, most of the things I learnt from her – her agency, her sense of self – I’m keeping. It was great that she could also be this experience for others.”

Even though Brie Larson’s latest outing in the MCU struggled at the box office, in no small part due to the (at the time ongoing) SAG strikes, it doesn’t seem like she’s ready to throw in the towel as Captain Marvel just yet. It’s likely that Carol Danvers will at least have a handful of further appearances in crossovers, and potentially one final solo outing. Yet even if she doesn’t return, the impact of her character will certainly be felt for decades to come.
